Overcoming Resentment

Resentment can result from an actual or perceived wrongdoing form another.  For example, most of us have been publicly humiliated – maybe even by a friend.  Sometimes we protest, sometimes we don’t.  That can also be true when another belittles us privately or puts us down on a regular basis.  I have numerous Christian friends who have found it difficult to get over the humiliation and the resentment can can grow from this kind of treatment.

I have heard it said that resentment takes root when you let your hurt become hate.  Sounds about right to me.  It also seems like that could give us all an opportunity to nip the resentment in the bud before it festers into hate.

I also believe that resentment shows a lack of faith in God and his plan, and it can stem from a love of the things of the world.  For instance, you may feel an injustice has occurred when you don’t get that promotion you wanted; yet the Bible is not concerned with the honor of human pride.  Remember Matthew 5:38-39:

“You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.  But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil.  But if anyone slaps you on the right check, turn to him the other also.”

Have you tried this?  What was the result?  I would love to hear from you.
