The Bible instructs us, time and time again, to turn our energies and our focus toward the Lord, not toward worldly, envious yearnings for fame, fortune, outward beauty – you pick the poison.
Remember Corinthians 13:4? “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.”
This means turning to “love thy neighbor” and wishing well for them. Just practicing this can change your heart if you work on it. After all, aren’t there plenty of good things to go around?
I try to remember this when good things happen to others that I wish had happened to me! I focus on what is important instead, and think about what I have that others do not have and literally count my blessings.
I always ask the Lord to help me to pray when I feel envious. This helps me be one with Him, and regain peace and wisdom in his presence.
What works for you? How do you fight envy?
