I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:12-13)
Paul wrote this letter to the church in Philippi when he was in prison, perhaps in Rome. His purpose, among other things, was to encourage the Philippians to stand firm in the face of persecution and rejoice regardless of circumstances.
We need to remember, as Paul points out in this letter to the Philippians, that prosperity can be a source of discontent, just as being in want often is. Living in Christ is the secret to being content, and the source of Paul’s abiding strength. It should be ours as well, no matter what our current circumstances are.
